How to remove the category of “Other” on iPhone and iPad

When you connect your iPhone, iPad or iPod to iTunes, we can watch the status bar, which displays the amount of free and used memory in categories of content, including the category of “Other.” The latter often occupies a significant portion of free memory. But what it holds? And most importantly, how to reduce it? Below we will try to answer this question.

In the category of “Other” gets quite a lot of different data. There are stored settings, Siri voices, system data and cache files that are stored when listening to streaming music, watching videos or photos.

If you look at similar statistics on an iOS device, the system will distribute the cached media files for the relevant sections. That is why the data about used memory for specific types of content on your device and in iTunes can be different.

So how do you get rid of unnecessary files and reduce the category of “Other”?

Clear cache of applications

Some applications allow the user to clear cached files. For example, in Tweetbot is the option to reset the cache separately for each account. Carefully review the settings most frequently used apps.

But not all programs have this option. Unfortunately, you cannot manually reset the cache in Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, Viber, Dropbox, OneDrive and many other applications.

To delete offline content applications

Some programs work with online content and are able to retain some of the elements in the memory device. For example, Apple allows Music to download songs to listen offline. One song may take up about 10 MB of memory, depending on quality and duration.

To delete a song from your device click on the I icon with three dots and select “Remove” and then “Delete download”. To view overall statistics of the employed downloaded songs, go to Settings -> General -> Storage and iCloud -> Manage and select the Music app. Click “Edit” in the upper right corner to delete the unnecessary songs or albums.

Another good example is Google Maps or any other navigation application that allows you to save the map of a particular area in the memory device. It’s possible that offline maps have been downloaded long ago and are no longer used. By removing them you can free up several hundred megabytes from the “Other”category.

To reset the cache, streaming, iTunes

Purchased or rented movie or TV show in iTunes Store when you play using the Video app on your device running iOS will be cached. Theoretically, at the end of the content playback system time should automatically get rid of cache, but this option does not always work. If a reboot or hard reset does not clear the cache, follow these steps:

– Launch the iTunes Store on your device and go to the tab Selection.
– Swipe the screen to the bottom and tap on Apple ID.
– Press Exit.

Then go to Settings -> Video and in the item select Home sharing Apple ID and choose sign Out.

Now force reboot your device and log in to your account in the iTunes Store and Home sharing. This should reset the app cache Video.

Disable iCloud Drive

If you store data in iCloud Drive, especially with a rate of 200 GB or more smart iOS file system will cache stored in the cloud files to speed up access to them.
To disable the service in Settings -> iCloud -> iCloud Drive. Disabling this option means the prohibition of data storage in iCloud for other programs.

Reboot your device

The system automatically removes the temporary files when insufficient space is available. To get rid of unwanted temporary data also helps ordinary restart.

Reinstall the application with pocketed cache

In Settings -> General -> Storage and iCloud -> Manage you can see the amount of memory that is installed applications. Selecting any program from the list you can see the actual “weight” of the application itself and the data.

The software in which documents and data are already much greater than the initial size, you should delete and re-download from the App Store. This process is inconvenient because of the need to re-install programs, but very effective for cleaning the internal cache of third-party applications.

Use utilities to clean the cache

The easiest way to prevent the uncontrolled increase of the section “Other” — to use a special app to clean temporary files. For Mac and Windows there are several utilities that we can recommend:

PhoneExpander for Mac
iMyfone Umate for Mac and Windows
PhoneClean for Mac and Windows
iFunBox for Mac and Windows
iMazing for Mac and Windows
Decipher Phone Cleaner (coming soon for Mac and Windows)

If you use a device with jailbreak, then the computer you do not need. Can use these programs:

Ryan Petric’s CacheClearer
Disk Pie

Users standard, non-jailbroken devices, you can try the app free Battery Doctor, which in the future should get the possibility to clear the cache.

Delete the Safari cache viewer

Safari stores information of visited web pages in cache to speed up their loading. To remove these files, go to Settings -> Safari, scroll down and select “Clear history and data websites.”

Third-party browsers also allow you to delete the cache. For example, in Google Chrome the coveted clear button is located under Settings -> Personal data.

Remove Siri voices

It is likely that your device is loaded and stored several voices Siri. For a 16-Gigabyte device is a luxury. To remove a downloaded voice, go to Settings -> General -> Universal access -> VoiceOver -> Speech -> Voice and delete unused vote using the swipe from right to left.

Do a “hard” reset

This is a more effective method than the usual restart. Hold the power button and the Home button simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. This method can effectively clean the cache, but they should not be abused to avoid damage to application data.

Reset all settings

According to some users, reset all settings the device successfully removes a large amount of temporary files. To reset go to Settings -> General -> Reset and select reset settings. This will not affect installed applications and their contents.

Restore system from backup

Many temporary files do not fall into the contents of the backup, as the system has the ability to restore them yourself if necessary. Restoring from a backup may actually reduce the volume of “Other”.

Reset to factory settings

This is an extreme, but extremely effective measure. Reset will delete all apps and “reinstall” iOS. You will have to re-install all the programs, fully customize the device and restore your content.

To reset to factory settings go to Settings -> General -> Reset and select “Erase all content and settings”.
